The first Asian and first non-white individual to win the Nobel prize in Physics, Chandrashekhar Venkat Raman was the first national professor of the independent India. His work in the discovery of ‘Raman Effect’ are well known but the scientist gave so much more to this world. A Bharat Ratna Awardee, CV Raman also experimented with acoustics by investigating the harmonic nature of the sound of ‘Tabla’ and ‘Mridangam’. The first Indian director of Indian Institute of Science (IISc), CV Raman was gifted the land in Bengaluru where he set up the research institute Indian Academy of Sciences. He also founded the Raman Research Institute where currently astronomy and astrophysics, light and matter physics, soft condensed matter and theoretical physics are main areas of research.
