Bindi is a coloured dot worn on the forehead in the centre of the eyebrows mainly by Hindus and Jains. The term bindi is originated from a Sanskrit word ‘Bindu’ which appears in the earliest known Sanskrit text of Rigveda. In ancient traditions, both men and women wore a tilak or bindi on their forehead and each time when they wash their face, they wore a new bindi/Tilak. It also has cultural and historical value in India.
Since there are many languages spoken across India, so there are different names of bindi such as Tikli, Kumkum, Teep, Bottu and many more.
Here are some of the basic reasons for wearing Bindi/Tilak -
1. Relieves Headaches
3. Improves our vision and eye health
4. Prevents Depression
5. Promotes restful sleep
6. Boosts concentration
7. Improves intuition and awareness
Before deep-diving into the scientific reasons for wearing a bindi/Tilak, let us know what is Bindi/Tilak made up of?
Tilak is mainly made up of Chandan powder, which is known for its cooling property, whereas, Kumkum/Bindi is a red-coloured powder which is made up of turmeric and slaked lime. Turmeric when mixed with slake lime turns into a red powder. The scientific reason for making it red is that red colour releases positive energy in the body.
The area between the eyebrows, which is known as the mid-brow area. Their ‘The Rishis’ have identified seven ‘chakras’ or ‘energy centres’. Among these seven energy centres, the sixth energy centre which is called ‘Ajna Chakra’ [also known as the ‘ third eye chakra] is at the centre or in the middle of the eyebrows. In the Ajna Chakra, there are nerve plexus and it is connected with pituitary gland and
hypothalamus.
So, What is actually the scientific reason for putting the Bindi / Tilak?
Whenever we apply a Bindi/Tilak, the point between the eyebrows which is known as the Ajna chakra should be pressed while applying. The Ajna chakra is connected to our
pituitary gland and hypothalamus. The pituitary gland is known as the master gland because it controls all other glands of our body. There are many endocrine glands in our body which releases various hormones.
Different hormones control different types of activities in our body. But all the endocrine glands are controlled by the pituitary gland, whereas, Hypothalamus controls the pituitary glands and is a part of our brain (nervous part). They both act as a connection between the brain and various chemicals in our body.
The nervous system and the endocrine system controls each and every activity of our body. When these two glands are stimulated automatically all the other glands will be stimulated by the hormones produced by the pituitary. There is a gland located near the kidney which is known as the
‘adrenal gland’. This gland is responsible for our stress condition behaviour and is controlled by the pituitary gland. So if this Agna Chakra is pressed then pituitary will be stimulated and if the pituitary is stimulated then hormones will be released properly in the body and if the hormones are released at an optimum level then all the glands present in our body will be stimulated optimally. This results in the optimum condition of our body which means that our body is in the best condition and all the activities are taking at its best.
